Day 77: The Name of the Lord

Proverbs 18:10

The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;
the godly run to him and are safe.

Principle

The name is representative of the person.

Have you ever explored the etymology of your name? It’s an interesting process – discovering the root and history of your name can be revealing. For example, my name, “Neil,” comes from the old Irish/Gaelic word for “champion.” Thus, the title of this blog, The Daily Champion.

Our advisor tells us, “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress.” The word, Name (or Shem) means reputation, signature, mark, or fame. The name represents the person. The use of the Name invokes all that the person is and represents. That’s why God was so strong on the misuse of His Name – “They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.” (Psalm 139:20)

Jesus prescribes us to use his name when approaching the Father in prayer – “In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” (John 16:23) The use of his name is represented as if he is approaching the Father himself.
