Day 58: Self-Promotion

Proverbs 27:2

Don’t call attention to yourself;
let others do that for you.

If you’ve done something special – it will get the attention of others – you won’t need to tell everyone.

Self-promotion has become an art form in modern culture – social media has all the trappings for the narcissist; yet, it also provides an incredible opportunity. A lot of people think that the world is revolving around them. The social platform has many negatives, but it also has many, many positives. It gives us the ability to network and connect globally as if we’re all local neighbors having coffee and bumping into one another on a downtown street.

Courtesy, ethics, and good manners should govern our conversations and connections on the social media platform as in public life.

Drawing attention to ourselves is not the goal – we should work to live commendable lives but should refrain from lavishing praise upon ourselves and our good works. Let’s leave that for others.

Jesus rebuked the Pharisees because they demanded prominent places and attention-drawing clothes.

“Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.” (Luke 11:43)

      Hope it didn’t hurt to much. God bless you.

    I like to do good deeds in secret…I only share what I do with my mentors when I feel I need advice on how to go about something in secret.

  3. Henry Bennett on April 30, 2018 at 6:13 am

    I like to do good deeds for others in secret. I generally would only share what I’m doing with one of my mentors and only if I need to ask for advice on how to go about doing something that I’m not sure of so as to keep it secret.

    God’s promotion is different than mans. You can’t edify yourself; if you do, it takes the form of pride.
    Do good and you will be exalted by The Lord.
    My dad used to say…”Son, don’t go around painting your ass with sunshine”. It’s not quite a Proverb, but I understood & remembered the principle.

    Thanks again for the spot light you turned on this morning. In 3 minutes or less you bring strong advice as your words mirror a chapter in proverbs. My heart rest in so much peace knowing that our home will one day be heaven. But that moment I stand before the King of kings and our works will be put to the refining flame of the creator. Will it burn Like the log, will that rock melt into embarrassment. Going to a birthday party without a gift is unheard of. Don’t show up before the King with works that cannot stand the refining fire of God and stand in shame without a gift. I want to leave a gift of pure gold. God Bless.
