Day 54: Don’t Jump Fences

Proverbs 23:10

Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless, for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you.

Principle

Never move a fence without knowing why it was put up.

A line between respect and familiarity governs every relationship. Familiarity breeds contempt. When someone acts with familiarity they don’t hesitate to cross established boundaries. They have a lawless attitude toward established “stones.”

If a government official doesn’t respect ancient and foundational documents, he flippantly dismisses them as old ideas, irrelevant to our times, and will twist the true meaning of words. This person is arrogantly moving ancient boundaries.

As a society, we must resist flippant changes in our foundations. For example, the argument to redefine marriage has fundamental and transformational repercussions on our society. Moving this ancient boundary stone will encroach on and replace established guidelines for relationships.

Our Advisor lays out a warning that we should heed – moving boundary stones and taking advantage of what seems defenseless is dangerous because God steps up to defend – he will take up the case.

Remember:

Be careful before you jump. Some fences are guardrails. Share on X

This is so true. We’ve seen way too much of this in the last few years.

Doug, I agree – we need to honor the boundaries of heritage and restrain from flippantly discrediting our forefathers.
