Day 365: Praise Your Wife
Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Principle
A husband should praise his wife.
Do you know that we should praise our wives?
Most people think that praise is meant for God only. I would argue that worship is reserved for God only. However, we are encouraged by our advisor to praise a woman who fears the Lord — a woman who distinguishes herself not by fleeting beauty nor by being charming.
The words of a husband have cultivated power for his wife. His words act like seeds sown into the ground that he will determine the harvest. If a husband doesn’t sow good seeds, he can’t expect a good harvest. Don’t sow negative words and expect positive results.
I’ve known men who play sophomoric games with their wives. At times, men toy with jealousy, thinking that it will keep their wives on their toes, making them wonder if he is true to her or not. Others are demanding and demeaning, treating their wives more like servants underneath them. I’ve also known men who control their wives with money.
After carefully observing these men, I’ve never known any of them to have a thriving marriage, nor one that lasted long term.
As I’ve shared before, I wasn’t raised in a home that modeled a healthy marriage or loving relationship. My mom’s second husband was a man who played games with her—he tried to control her with money, rewarding her only when he got his way. He was secretive. He was demanding and demeaning. He was brutish. He was brash and arrogant toward her.
Even as a young man, I knew that I would have a different kind of marriage. I wanted a woman that I could trust. Someone who would partner in life with me. Someone who loved God and unreservedly loved me.
I want to suggest something to you that may surprise you. Women have claimed Proverbs 31 as their chapter; however, if they’re going to be a Proverbs 31 woman, they need to be married to Proverbs 1 through 30 men.
