Day 20: Wine & Strong Drink Are Deceptive

Proverbs 20:1

Wine is a mocker, strong drink a riotous brawler;
and whoever errs or reels because of it is not wise.

Principle

One night of drunkenness can expose your family to generational curses.

Here’s my confession – I do not drink alcohol. You may be surprised that my decision is not based upon a religious conviction that I must abstain. I choose not to drink because of experiences that I have had and exposure to seeing good people ruined by its deception.

I grew up surrounded by drunkenness and drug abuse. My personal objection to alcohol is the indignity that it brings to men. Our Advisor gives the same warning. He warns those who have led astray or deceived by drink – for those who lose their ability to think rationally and conduct themselves with integrity.

Let me give you examples of men of faith who were deceived by alcohol:
Noah was a man of great faith, who received a prophetic warning of hydrological disaster – the global flood – and labored for decades to build the ark to save his family. When the waters receded Noah planted a vineyard. After drinking heavily, he lost his integrity and exposed his son, Ham to a generational curse.

Lot was considered a righteous man, who escaped the meteoric annihilation of Sodom and Gomorrah; however, a night of drunkenness allowed his daughters to commit incestuous acts with him. Again, resulting in a generational curse.

Our mission is to protect our families and we carry the responsibility to protect them from our own appetites. To do so, we must be sober-minded and vigilant. We must think in terms of generations and not for immediate gratifications.
