Day 142: Directional Intent for Children
Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Principle
Give your children directional intent – as they mature they’ll know where to go.
When it was time for my first child to learn to drive I became grateful for the infrastructure of curbs. Curbs are important. They narrow the road and keep you out of the ditch.
For every mile of road there are two miles of ditch.
It’s important that children have curbs in their life. They need to know the boundaries. In fact, many children will venture off from you and look back, “Do you see me?” As they keep creating distance, they also keep looking back to see if you’re still watching over them. They’re waiting to see if you’re going to snap your fingers and pull them back into proximity.
If a parent never establishes the boundaries, they will keep going until they are outside of your voice and watching eye.
Parenting gives children a narrow road to travel – it’s directional intent. As the children mature into young adults, those established roads will keep them on track so that they won’t get lost.
