Day 121: The More You Get, The Less You Are

Proverbs 1:19

Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money; it robs them of life.

When you grab all you can get, that’s what happens: the more you get, the less you are.

It’s paradoxical – the more you get, the less you are. The more you gather and hoard, the less you will keep. The more you give away and scatter, the more you will keep. And the more you will become.

The word greed means “to increase through violence, covetous, to spoil, to divide.” A covetous person not only wants what another has, but they want it at the expense of the other.

One of the most disgusting and embarrassing moments in scripture is when soldiers, grown men cast lots to see who would take home the seamless garment that Jesus wore. They’re pathetic little scavengers – vultures without dignity. (John 19:24; Psalm 22:18) That’s the picture of all of those who want to increase at the expense of others.

Authentic manhood has two purposes that work in harmony with the other – the entrepreneurial drive gives a man the ability to gather. Still, the philanthropic cause provides the same man the responsibility to scatter. The entrepreneur uses his drive to meet the needs of his household, grant the desires of his family, and finance his purpose. It’s not about cars, clothes, and cottages – it’s about his cause.
