Day 80: Religious Performance

Proverbs 21:3

Clean living before God and justice with our neighbors mean far more to God than religious performance.

Principle

You won’t impress God with religious performance.

During the days of Jesus, the day’s religious men were divided primarily into two groups – Pharisees and Sadducees – each with their political, social, and spiritual emphasis. One thing is for sure about these guys – they performed religious duties. The name, Pharisee, means “set apart.” The name, Sadducee, means “to be right, just.”

As good as their outward appearances reflected their religion, they could not facade the deadness of their faith. Jesus exclaimed about them, “Watch out!” Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” (Matthew 16:6)

One of the real dangers of pursuing to be “men of God” is creating a performance system rather than changing our hearts before God. Many efforts toward reaching men have been performance-based – completing studies, making personal sacrifices, and becoming sanctified-saints. These efforts fail because they do not change the heart of man.

FivestarMan communicates to the five purposes that reside within the heart of man – when a man gains an understanding of these purposes, his life becomes a passionate pursuit of authentic manhood.
