Day 303: Dignity

Proverbs 30:29-31

There are three solemn dignitaries, four that are impressive in their bearing— a lion, king of the beasts, deferring to none; a rooster, proud and strutting; a billy goat; a head of state in stately procession.

Principle

There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good pride’ represents our dignity and self-respect. ‘Bad pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance. – John Maxwell

Have you been to the fitness center where the posers constantly flex in front of the mirrors? They strut their stuff and grunt loudly, dropping the weights at the end of their reps. It’s hard to see manhood misrepresented in such a way.

On the other hand, some men need to step up their game and represent themselves with dignity and self-respect. It may be in the area of their physical condition, their clothing, or the way that they carry themselves in public.

Having dignity isn’t sinful pride. Having some self-respect isn’t being showy or arrogant. As men, we need to have a good sense of self-worthiness without strutting our stuff in front of mirrors.
