Day 284: Generosity
Proverbs 11:25
The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
Principle
Generosity flows from the heart of gratitude.
I recently had dinner with a young entrepreneur that has done exceptionally well in the last few years. We were eating at a local dive – a favorite of mine. The waitress was good and attentive but not outstanding – nothing worth noting about her service. What is remarkable is that just a few years ago, he could hardly rub two nickels together.
When it came time for the bill, we both reached for it as our custom of arguing over who would pay. This time, he won and reached into his pocket, pulled out the amount of the bill, and then grabbed a hundred and put it in the folder. We stood to leave as the waitress took the folder toward the register. When she opened it, she looked stunned, glazed quickly to get our attention, and said, “You’ve made a mistake. Here – you’ve left a hundred.”
My friend politely and discreetly said, “No, that is for you and your family.”
You may think it is easy for him to be generous with his money because he is doing well. However, he was generous when he didn’t have money – now that he does, he is no different.
Generosity flows from the heart of gratitude.
I’ve known others who weren’t so generous, even though they equally were doing well financially. They didn’t have the joy that my friend had. They counted the cost of everything. They seemed embittered and judgmental toward those doing as well as themselves. Even though they had money, they weren’t happy people.
