Day 237: Kindness to Your Enemy

Proverbs 25:21

If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat.
If they are thirsty, give them water to drink.

Principle

When we show kindness to our enemy, we act in a Christ-like manner.

This one is tough. I am confident that some men will read the Proverb and skip this one. Those who will consider it and begin applying this principle could see a dramatic change within them. This Proverb stretches us to adopt the mind of Christ.

When Man sinned against God – the relationship was severed – men became hostile and developed an antipathy against God. Yet, even while we were sinners – haters – hostile – God loved us and showed His love by giving us the Bread of Life and the Water of His Spirit.

Jesus demonstrated this kindness to a Samaritan woman who came to the well. The Samaritans and the Jews had hostility toward one another. When Jesus asks the woman for some water, her reply reveals, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” Jews did not associate with Samaritans.

Then Jesus offered her a drink, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

Following the example of Jesus, we should look for opportunities to help those with whom there is hostility.

It’s not easy, but there is a reward system attached to acting out this incredible principle.
