Day 204: Respect Your Father
Proverbs 23:22
Listen with respect to the father who raised you; when your mother grows old, don’t neglect her.
Principle
A son has a responsibility to respect his father and keep a loving relationship with his mother.
The last words of the Old Testament give a startling warning, “See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.” (Malachi 4:5)
This final warning is directed to Fathers – if they do not return, even repent, toward their children, the land will suffer destruction. There is a kinetic relationship between men and the earth – the relationship results from sin. It began with Adam – when he embezzled from God’s property (the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil), the land was thrust into poverty.
Paul said that the earth is trembling in the pains of childbirth, awaiting the revelation of the sons of God (Romans 8:20 – 21).
Today’s Proverb is speaking to sons. The onus is now placed upon sons to be respectful to their fathers and keep a loving relationship with their mothers.
