Day 174: Protect Your Legacy

Proverbs 23:21

Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Principle

A man who cannot control his desire will never leave a legacy.

It is an amazingly blunt statement – “Esau I have hated. I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.” (Malachi 1:3) What was the object of God’s wrath toward Esau? Esau couldn’t control his appetite; therefore, his heritage became a ravaged wasteland. Esau didn’t value the Blessing that his father would give him. He didn’t think beyond the next meal.

Another Biblical example of a man who forfeited his legacy was Samson. Samson was a powerful man with an equally destructive appetite. Samson was given an unusual assignment at birth. God instructed his parents to raise him as a Nazarite – a man in covenant with God that required obedience by not touching anything dead, not drinking wine, and not allowing a razor to cut his hair. Samson was flippant toward his covenant – he withdrew honeycomb from within a lion’s carcass; thus, breaking his promise.

Being weak-minded toward his covenant caused Samson to be also weak-willed toward women.

If we’re going to leave a legacy, we must protect it from our own weaknesses and appetites. You will never protect your legacy if you can’t control your appetite.

Don’t allow a temporary hunger pain cost you a lifetime of legacy. Share on X
