Day 148: Who’s In Charge?

Proverbs 28:12

When good people are promoted, everything is great, but when the bad are in charge, watch out!

Unless you are faithful with what is another man’s, you do not qualify for your own.

This is one of the most difficult situations that we all must deal with. There are times when the right people are promoted and put in the positions of leadership that directly affect us, and we benefit from them. However, when the wrong person is put in charge, the consequences are horrible for us.

Some men argue, “I don’t mind serving under leadership, but the person I am serving is unethical – or mean – or ruthless – or simply incompetent.” What do you do when you’re placed underneath a hostile leader?

David serves as a biblical example of someone who served faithfully under a man who feared the young upstart. David’s king was manic-depressive; Saul wasn’t just unhealthy; he was demonically harassed, who vented paranoia, trying multiple times to kill him.

David had the opportunity on several occasions to take his revenge on his king; however, he yielded to the instruction, “Do not touch My anointed ones; do my prophets no harm” (1 Chronicles 16:22, Psalm 105:15).

You may argue, “But this guy is evil. He is demonic. How can you expect me to be faithful under this kind of leadership?”

Interestingly, there is a principle for a promotion that comes with serving faithfully under harsh leadership. When you show proper respect, not only to those who are kind and considerate and reasonable, but also to those who are difficult, overbearing, unjust, and crooked, God will see the mistreatment and will bring promotion into your life.

How can you justify serving this kind of person and expect a promotion? Because you serve through leadership and not around leadership. As you serve through a hostile leader, you’re serving the Lord Himself, and He will bring promotion into your life.
