Day 139: Lazy Bones

Proverbs 19:15

Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless go hungry.

Laziness leads to purposelessness.

If you read the Bible, you will soon discover a disdain toward laziness. God didn’t make us lazy. Our physical bodies are not designed for prolonged leisure.

My grandfather was a powerful man – a man’s man. His physical strength didn’t come from the gym but the hard work of a glass factory. As a boy, I would have him show me his biceps – they were huge! After he retired, I saw a powerful man sit down. He had nothing to keep him moving. He sits down in his Lazy Boy recliner (one of the worst inventions ever made) and grew increasingly tired and large. He hated what he morphed into the last few years of his life. His weight gain caused his knees tremendous pain. He struggled to get out of the Lazy Boy.

A few years ago, I saw a very successful man take early retirement. He had made enough money to live the rest of his life very comfortable and leave a good inheritance for his children. However, after he retired, he began to wander. He actually took on the nature of a busybody – getting into other people’s business and meddling in other people’s affairs.

We should live our lives in perpetual motion toward fulfilling our purpose. That’s not to say that we don’t take days off. In fact, God ordered a day for rest, reflection, and recharging. We should enjoy the fruit of our labor. But that is very different from shifting our energy down to a crawl and becoming lazy.
