Day 111: Be Sharp!

Proverbs 21:5

The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.

Principle

Success is when preparation meets opportunity.

A lot of men are running wild without restraint. They’re constantly scurrying about looking for the next opportunity. Other guys are in constant preparation mode – always preparing, schooling and training – they never seize the opportunity.

Many men had prepared for war against the Philistines, but they didn’t seize the opportunity to become heroic and defeat Goliath. David had prepared through his diligence. David was an example of a young man who prepared so that he took advantage of it when he faced an opportunity. He had fought a lion, a bear, and so, facing a giant warrior was the next step for him to take on the army who stood behind Goliath.

Make no mistake about it – David wasn’t hasty. You see that he was a calculated man and would only use weapons that he had proven. When King Saul offered David his own armor, David refused because they were unfamiliar to him.

“If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success.” Ecclesiastes 10:10

The word, skill, in this verse actually means dexterity. It means that you can use your hands gracefully, skillfully, with precision, able to think quickly and cleverly. That’s what David was able to do with a sling. He had proven it, and when the opportunity came, he was ready.
