Day 100: The Evasive Eye – Wink, Wink

Proverbs 10:10

Whoever winks maliciously causes grief, and a chattering fool comes to ruin.

Empty words and winking of the eye are signs of fraud.

The gesture of a wink can be extremely offensive in some cultures. It is a type of secret communication. For example, in India and some Latin American countries, a wink is a sexual invitation. In business, a wink can signal deception regarding a contract or fraudulent business deal. The word for wink actually refers to “tearing, cut off, or to destroy.” That’s why we’re advised that it causes grief. A wink is rarely appropriate outside of a humorous situation. As men, we should be very keen as to what our gestures communicate.

Similarly, our Advisor warns of a “chattering fool.” This is someone who gives “lip service” – their words don’t mean anything – they’re just prating foolishly. You see an abundance of this on social media. Paul tells Timothy to turn away and avoid godless chatter (1 Timothy 6:20; 2 Timothy 2:16). Much like a ventriloquist who provides voice and fraudulently speaks through a dummy, a chatterer is spewing words that he has heard others say and don’t truly represent anything of himself.

Both of these types of communication are fraudulent and should be avoided.

An evasive eye is a sign of trouble; a chattering fool is to be avoided. Click To Tweet
