Day 341: How the Mighty Have Fallen
Proverbs 7:26
She has brought many victims; her slain is a mighty throng.
Principle
Very weak agents can bring down a strong man.
Proverbs is the compilation of wisdom written by a man to men. When you repeatedly read Proverbs, Solomon’s primary concern for men is the Adulteress. She is portrayed as cunning, seductive, deceptive, brazen, sly, conniving, loose, disloyal, and filthy. She is described to be a nemesis of manhood.
If we’re not careful, we can become calloused to his promptings and skip over the warnings without carefully listening. Much like a child, when you’ve repeated your wisdom, they sigh with disbelief, “I know, I know, you’ve told me.”
My sensitivity to adultery is much like my repulsion to cigarette smoking.
I grew up in a household of chain smokers. The pungent, stale, and bitter smell of smoke lingering in the air, seeping into the fabric, and leaving its bitter residue on my clothes was disgusting. The exposure to second-hand smoke developed an allergy in me—the only allergy I am aware of. It causes me tremendous nausea and massive headaches.
For me, cigarettes are an enemy that has killed many of my family members.
The same is valid for adultery. My family has been torn apart because of an adulteress affair. The absence of my father marked my childhood. The repercussions have lasted a lifetime. The residue of the unholy romance leaves a bitter taste in me.
For me, adultery is an enemy that has destroyed many of my friends’ lives.
I’m not entertained by it. I’m not humored by it. I’m not sympathetic to it. I hate how it reduces a man to his lowest form. I despise the groveling. I can’t stand seeing a man of high caliber and impact shamed by it.
These two agents of destruction have destroyed more men than all of the wars combined.
