Day 287: Leadership is Influence
Proverbs 14:28
The mark of a good leader is loyal followers; leadership is nothing without a following.
Principle
A leader without followers is merely taking a walk.
John Maxwell perfectly defined leadership by saying, “Leadership is influence.”
By birth, men are leaders. As a man, you are positioned for leadership. You’re given the authority to that position. However, you will lose your followers if you’re not a good leader.
The first king of Israel, Saul, was chosen and given the position of king because he was a humble man; however, over time, his position went to his head. He began to think of himself more highly than he should—he became arrogant. The larger he grew in his head, the smaller his influence became in his kingdom. Then when a young shepherd boy named David arrived on the scene—men began to follow David, and women began to sing songs about David—Saul’s insecurities caused him to lose his mind.
It is tempting for leaders to focus on the benefits of their position rather than humbly accepting the responsibility of leadership.
I’ve seen men do this on a much smaller scale regarding their wives and families. They throw around their position as the “man of the house” without living up to the responsibilities of being the man of the house. They lose their wives’ respect and experience their children’s mockery.
