The Kid
Gary “The Kid” Carter, converted from an outfielder to a catcher by the Montreal Expos, went on to win 3 Gold Gloves and 5 Silver Slugger Awards. Despite his success in Montreal, he may be best known for helping the New York Mets win the 1986 World Series. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.

Steak & Eggs

Dan Uggla v. Joe DiMaggio
Dan Uggla’s impressive 33 game hit-streak, the longest in the Major Leagues since 2006, ended August 14th, 2011. During the streak Uggla raised his 2011 batting average from .160 to .231. The end of the streak is a stark reminder that Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hit streak remains baseball’s seemingly unbreakable record.

Welcome back Winnipeg!
In 1996 the beloved Jets were torn from Winnipeg and moved south to Phoenix, becoming the Coyotes, as part of the NHL’s warm weather dreams. In 1997 Atlanta was awarded an NHL expansion team (the Atlanta Flames had moved to Calgary in 1980). The team was thoughtfully named the Thrashers. After 14 season, and waning interest in Atlanta, the owner’s...

F*ck F*ce
According to his bat, William Oliver Ripken was a fuck face. The Fleer Corporation agreed with Billy’s bat, and released this information to the public in 1989 in the form of a trading card.
Immediately regretting this decision, The Fleer Corporation scrambled to hide the opinion of the bat, releasing versions in which the words were scrawled over with a marker, whited out, and airbrushed....

Canseco Header
In 1993, at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, the head of Jose Canseco aided a long ball hit by Cleveland’s Carlos Martinez for a home run. And for once the Tribe wasn’t the laughing stalk.

The Hill
Paying homage to ballparks of old, like Crosley Field, the Hill in deep center field in Minute Maid park in Houston often provides a great fielding challenge. But on May 16th the 90-foot wide incline in center provided an excellent get-a-way for a 27 year old fan celebrating his birthday.

La Tri
In only their second World Cup qualifying year to date, the Ecuadorian National team enjoyed it’s most successful tournament in 2006, reaching the round of 16 after stunning Poland and Costa Rica. However their run met it’s end by the infamous foot of David Beckham and the team from England. With the game a stalwart at 0-0 in the 59 minute, Beckham netted a free kick that “La Tri” was unable to...
Teal Mariners
Led by the likes of Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Junior, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson and Jay Buehner the ‘95 Mariners trailed the California Angels in the A.L. After beating the Angels in a one-game playoff, for the Seattle franchise’s first postseason birth, the M’s came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the New York...

The Stirrup
“Aside from a few players like Barry Zito, Jonathan Sanchez, Juan Pierre and Jamie Moyer, the sight of stirrups in the major leagues is rare. (Greg Maddux wears socks with stirrups sewn on, which only half counts.) The most popular look today seems to be having your pants pulled down around the tops of the shoes, which is actually how the early baseball players of the 1840’s and 50’s wore...

Manny being Manny
Drafted by Cleveland as the 13th overall pick of the 1991 draft Manny Ramirez has been said by teammates to be in his “own world” and “affably apathetic.” Born in the Dominican Republic and moving at a young age to the Washington Heights neighborhood of northern Manhattan, Manny is said to be of the top two players ever to come out of the New York City public school system....

On an 8th inning suicide squeeze and behind the arm of Fausto Carmona, the Cleveland Indians (4-2) defeated the Boston Red Sox (0-6) 1-0 to complete a three game sweep at Jacob’s Field this week.
The April 5, 2011 Minnesota Twins
Last night, the Minnesota Twins came back from a four-run deficit in the eighth to beat the New York Yankees 5-4 after ten innings of play. “And it’s even better because it’s not as much what the Twins did right, but what the Yankees did wrong.”
More here. Go Twins.
Popeye
No no.16 seed has ever beat a no. 1, but in 1991 Murray State took Michigan State to the wire. The Racers, lead by Popeye Jones (Two time Ohio Valley Player of the Year, and future Dallas Maverick), lost in overtime 74-71 to the Spartans in one of the most exciting first round could be bracket-busters to date.
